Wherryman's Way Update
22 January 2026
We have received this update from Norfolk County Council, if you have any queries please contact then directly.
I am writing to you as a member of the Wherryman’s Way stakeholder group to inform you that the project to improve the Wherryman’s Way at Bramerton has been suspended.
This decision follows a significant and unexpected increase of approximately 700% in the cost of biodiversity net-gain measures - which are a legal requirement under current legislation.
The rise in costs stems from an independent review commissioned by the Broads Authority who act as the planning authority in this instance. This has meant that the project is no longer financially viable.
We have explored alternative options to deliver these improvements, but we have been unable to identify a feasible solution. Consequently, we have had no choice but to withdraw the current planning application.
I understand this news may be disappointing and we will continue to explore ways to improve access along Wherryman’s Way.
The government has indicated that the rules around biodiversity net-gain for projects of this nature may change in the future. Should this happen, we will revisit the project.
