Free Bus Travel for Disabled Pass Holders to Be Available 24/7

Eligible disabled people across England will be able to travel on local buses free of charge at any time of day from 1 April 2027, following a government announcement to remove existing time restrictions on concessionary bus passes.

Currently, disabled bus passes are generally valid only between 9.30am and 11pm on weekdays, unless local authorities provide additional concessions. The new national scheme will allow eligible pass holders to travel free of charge at any time, regardless of where they live.

The Government says the change will help disabled people access work, education, healthcare and training opportunities, while also providing additional support with the cost of living.

Backed by £60 million in government funding, the measure aims to end the current variation in concessionary travel arrangements between different areas of England.

Eligibility criteria for disabled bus passes will remain unchanged and continue to be administered by local authorities.

The changes are due to come into effect on 1 April 2027, providing greater flexibility, independence and accessibility for disabled residents across the country.
